Father and son perform at Autosport International
Dec 29, 2005
There will be a display of rally driving from former British Rally Champions at the Autosport International 2006 Live Action Arena which is being held at Birmingham’s NEC from Thursday 12th January to Sunday 15th January.
The invited drivers represent the battle of the British Rally Championship over the past decades. Fans will be keen to see old sparring partners Jimmy McRae and Russell Brookes in action whilst youngest son Alister will be driving alongside Martin Rowe.
Five times former British Rally Champion Jimmy McRae will be re-united with the Rothmans Metro 6R4 which he drove in 1986. This car is now owned by David Richards who is keen to see the car driven again to it’s full potential by McRae. The Metro will be a reminder to Jimmy as to how he was served a bitter blow on the last day of the Manx International, the final round of the 1986 British Rally Championship. “I was lying a comfortable second to Pond when the cambelt broke in the engine. Ian Grindrod who was my co-driver at that time and I were devastated, so close to winning the championship title. I drove the car again on the RAC Rally that year and was running second to Stig Blomqvist before being plagued by punctures. I am looking forward to being reunited with the 6R4 the day before Live Action Arena commences. The programme for the event which includes cars from all forms of motorsport sounds good fun. Most of all I will enjoy driving alongside Alister who will be driving a Subaru Impreza Group N11. This will be a similar car to which he drove in the 2004 Production Car World Rally Championship,” said Jimmy McRae.
Russell Brookes will be driving a Ford Escort and Martin Rowe a Subaru Impreza N11.
