STATEMENT ISSUED ON BEHALF OF COLIN McRAE’S FAMILY
Sep 17, 2007
Speaking on behalf of the whole family, Colin’s father, Jim McRae, said today:
“It is with much sadness and regret that we have to make this statement.
It is unbelievable that Colin and Johnny’s lives have been taken so prematurely and in such a tragic manner.
Colin was a great son, a loving husband to Alison and a fantastic father to Johnny and his big sister Hollie. Johnny was a great wee guy, spending every spare minute with his dad, and even at this early stage it looked like he had the potential to carry on the family dynasty.
Our thoughts are also very much with the families of Ben Porcelli and Graeme Duncan. Ben was a great buddy of Johnny’s and they had always spent a lot of time together both in and out of school. Graeme, who now resides in France, had been a close friend of Colin’s since their schooldays and was back in Lanark on holiday.
We are thankful for the overwhelming number of messages of support we have received from all around the world. Colin was very much an inspiration and role model to motorsport fans the world over.
As you can imagine this is a very difficult time for the family and we would ask that our privacy be respected and we be allowed to grieve in private.”

I remember the 24th November 1991 as if it was yesterday. We piled in the car to have a day in Wales. We watched this young lad in Cloecanog, Hafren and Penmachno in the New Prodrive Legacy. This was Jimmy’s son and it must definitely run in the family.
To jimmy, Alastair, Colins wife, daughter and Mother. Please accept my sincere condolencies on your loss.
you must all feel very proud that Colin brought so much pleasure and entertainment to a world of Motorsport fans.
My thoughts are with you all.
Best Wishes.

I still can’t believe this tragic news. Both Colin and yourself still deserve a top drive in the WRC and have unfinished business.
I have many great memories of watching your brother Colin on the RAC.
Driving for hours into the forests in November, queuing up and walking miles to see him come through, always flat out and on the limit.
Seeing him on the road section near Newtown in his Nova (No. 84) on his first RAC in 1987.
Seeing his rolled 3 door Cossie come out of Dovey on the Monday lunchtime in 1989 with a big ‘V’ in the roof, and then watching him kick the windscreen out before he entered the next stage.
His even more battered 4 door Saphire with the shed bolt holding the door together the following year in 1990.
The anticipation when he lead the Rally for a couple of years in the early 90’s before crashing out in Grizedale in the Rothmans Legacy.
His wins in 94, 95 and 97 in the Impreza, and of course the Championship in ’95. Remember being in Penmachno on the final stage, with crowds lining either side of the track, and the airhorns going off everywhere – then racing to see him come into the final control by the A55 when he had just won the championship.
The many battles on home soil with Burnsie – What an era that was !
Remember also when he came past, flat out, visibly faster that the rest in Rhonda on the first Friday morning in 2001, in the Martini Focus WRC, only to hear on the radio that he’d barrel rolled out 2 stages later on SS4 while we were in the car travelling to our next stage. Burnsie then going on to win the 2001 championship at the end of that rally – can’t believe they have both gone.
Like alot of people have said, there was always something exciting happening around Colin. You always knew something could happen. Usually and incredibly fast time, flamboyant style or an accident waiting to happen.
As a 39 year old myself with a 5 year old son and 7 year old daughter, I can’t imagine the pain that Alison, Hollie, yourself and the McRae family are going through.
My sincere condolences to the whole McRae family and those of the other victims of this terrible tragedy.
Hopefully, your son Max can carry on the dynasty !
RIP Colin – Thanks for the memories !

Alister, My condolences go out to yourself, Alsion, Jim and the rest of your family and friends following this tragic event.
I have followed Colin and yourself over the years and can not even think about what you are all going through. this is such a lost to motorsport.
It was only the other day i speaking to a freiend “arguing” if Colin would come back into the WRC as a private entry.
Little Johnnys life was cut so short at such an early age, not forgeting Johnnys pal Ben.
My Condolences also to Duncans wife, Jennifer, and his 10-month-old baby called Jake.
I know this is early days, but if a Colin Mcrae, Son and Friends, memorial Rally takes place, i will be on the front row showing my support to a legend.
Our hearts across the world go out to you.
RIP in peace lads.

Dear All, I am very sorry to hear about the death of Colin Mcrae, and is son Jonny.
I loved Colin as he made each WRC very exciting. I live in Wales and when the WRC came to my neck of the woods I managed to meet him, I will never forget how polite he was and very friendly, he was always forced on the task he had in front of him.
I followed Colin in more or less all the Rally Stages right through out the stages that took him and I thought Wales, Also I not only following him in the WRC but in all the other races he did, when he did the 24 hour race and everything else.
I loved the way he made a entrance in 2005 when he came back to the UK and join force with Skoda and I was hoping that he would rejoin the WRC and come back to the thing he did best, Rallying.
I will always remember him as a friend.
Please expect my condolence to you Alison, Jim, and everyone else. I will really miss him; Rallying will not be the same without you. (Mate)

My heart goes out to the McRae Family. I was doing Radio car on the network Q in 1995 located the next bend to where Carlos went off and handed Colin the Championship. I was near to Carlos car that was been man handled back onto the stage when Colin Came through and i will always remmeber the cheering and air horns going off when Colin came through next car on the road. And in my eyes and with a lot of people agreeing with me, Colin will all ways the NO. 1 Driver of all time due to his flamboyant & ALL OR NOTHING APPROACH. Mind you having seen jimmy three times this year twice on eppynt on the Welsh internation and the harry flatters along with the mid wales stages. He deffently has not lost it. But I fear this being the end of the Mcrae family in Rallying with jonny being take prematurley as well. Times are going to hard and in time wounds will heal eventually. We would like to thank your family, friends and all those involved for yesterday’s celebration service for Colin and Johnny. It was a fitting tribute to a very special man who touched the lives of many with his sheer determination and spectacular driving style whilst remaining a down to earth guy, and to his son who was very obviously destined to follow in his father’s footsteps. We’re sure he would have done the McRae name proud. Watching Colin rallying was something really special, no one else set the stages alight like he did. Just the mention of his name sent a wave of excitement through the waiting crowd. We will never forget you Col.
We hope that they were both looking down on yesterday’s tribute and realise just how much they will be missed by family, friends and fans alike. We were proud to be there in their honour. May they rest in peace.
